How to turn off keyboard sounds on a Mac
Updated
macOS plays no click when you type unless something asks it to. A typing sound comes from a keyboard sound app such as Teclo, from an accessibility setting such as Slow Keys or typing feedback, or from the keyboard itself, and each one is turned off in a different place.

1. Find where the sound comes from
| What you hear | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| A mechanical click, typewriter or other sound on every key | A keyboard sound app (section 2) |
| A click when you press a key and a different one when it is accepted | Slow Keys with click key sounds (section 3) |
| A voice reading letters or words | Speak typing feedback or VoiceOver (section 3) |
| A beep on Shift, Control, Option or Command | Sticky Keys (section 3) |
| A pop when you press the volume keys | Volume feedback (section 4) |
| The keys themselves, with the Mac muted | The keyboard (section 5) |
Search for “turn off keyboard sound mac” and Google suggests “turn off keyboard clicks macbook pro” and “how to turn off keyboard typing sound mac” next to it. Most of those clicks come from one of the first two rows.
2. A keyboard sound app
Look in the menu bar for an icon you don’t recognise, or in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Input Monitoring for an app that watches the keyboard.
Teclo:
- Pause: right-click the keycap icon in the menu bar and choose Pause Teclo, or click the switch at the top right of its window. The icon dims while it is paused.
- Quit: right-click the icon and choose Quit Teclo.
- Keep it from starting: Teclo turns on Launch at login the first time it runs from Applications. Untick “Launch at login” in its Options, or remove it under System Settings, General, Login Items.
- Quieter, not off: move its volume slider down, or tick “Silence modifier keys” in Options.
Teclo has no automatic mute for calls or for particular apps, and no headphones-only mode. Some other apps do; the table above shows what each app’s own page says about muting.
3. An accessibility setting
All three are in System Settings, under Accessibility.
- Slow Keys click sounds: Accessibility, Keyboard, then the Info button next to Slow Keys. Apple describes “Use click key sounds” as: “Have keys make a sound when pressed.” Untick it, or turn Slow Keys off. Option-Command-F5 opens the accessibility shortcuts panel, where Slow Keys can be switched off too.
- Sticky Keys beep: in the same Keyboard pane, Sticky Keys has “Beep when a modifier key is set”: “Have your Mac make a sound when you press a modifier key.”
- Spoken typing: Accessibility, Read & Speak, “Speak typing feedback”: “Have your Mac speak what you type or the keys you press.” Its Info button has Echo characters, Echo words and Echo modifier keys. On macOS 15 and earlier the same setting is under Spoken Content.
- VoiceOver: if a voice describes everything, not only your typing, VoiceOver is on. Press Command-F5 to turn it off.
4. macOS’s own sound effects
These are in System Settings, Sound, under Sound Effects. They are not typing sounds, but they are often what people mean:
- “Play feedback when volume is changed”: “Play a sound when you change the volume so you can hear the new volume.”
- “Play user interface sound effects”: “Play sound effects when you perform certain actions, such as dragging an item to the Trash.”
- “Alert sound”: “Choose a sound to play when you receive an alert.”
5. The keyboard itself
If the sound is the keys themselves, no setting changes it; the keyboard’s build and, on a mechanical keyboard, its switches decide how loud it is. If you like the sound but your neighbours don’t, play it in your headphones instead: mechanical keyboard or keyboard sound app weighs the two, and which pack suits where you work picks the quieter sounds.
