If you want the feel, buy the keyboard. If you want the sound, or can't be loud where you type, the app is the cheaper test.

What only a keyboard gives
Feel. Key travel, the bump of a tactile switch, the weight of a heavy case: a sound app can play the sound of these, but your fingers still land on the same flat keys. Owners of real boards notice: one, with “12 of my own”, wrote that keyboard sound apps sound “nothing like a real Mechanical Keyboard”. The sound in the room is also part of it, and that is the one thing a keyboard sound app cannot put there for you alone.
What only an app gives
- Silence for everyone else. In headphones, the clack is yours. Google’s suggestions for “mechanical keyboard in office” include “loud mechanical keyboard in office” and “mechanical keyboard in open office”, which says how often that is the worry.

If you choose a keyboard
Quieter switches are now a large part of what people buy: in kbd.news’ survey of 17 shops, “about 1 million switches sold” in December 2025, “silent switches account for 40% of the top 10 and 27% of the top 100”. Is a keyboard sound app as good as a mechanical keyboard?
For sound in headphones it can come close; for feel it does nothing. The keys you press are still your MacBook's or Magic Keyboard's, with the same travel and the same lack of switch.
Can I use a mechanical keyboard in an office?
Many people do, but it is heard by everyone near you. Silent switches help; they made up 40% of the ten best-selling switches in one December 2025 survey of shops.
Does a keyboard sound app work with a mechanical keyboard?
