Why typing sounds lag in Bluetooth headphones

Updated

Bluetooth headphones and speakers add a delay between the Mac sending a sound and you hearing it, and no app can remove it. For typing sounds that land with the key, use the Mac's speakers, wired headphones, or AirPods Max on their USB-C cable.

Why Bluetooth is late

Over Bluetooth, sound is compressed, sent over the radio in packets and decoded in the headphones before you hear it, and each step takes time. Apple’s Logic Pro guide states the consequence plainly: “Using wireless Bluetooth headphones or speakers as the audio output for Logic Pro also results in latency”, and you “can’t change the amount” caused by them. Apple’s advice there is to use Bluetooth devices “for mixing or listening only”.

A keyboard sound is the hardest case. You know to the millisecond when your finger landed, so a click that arrives late reads as wrong in a way a late video soundtrack does not. In the reviews and threads we read about keyboard sound apps, delay was the most common complaint, and most often over Bluetooth. Even Klack’s FAQ, which says Klack “does not add any latency”, puts Bluetooth headphones down as the cause.

How much delay

Apple does not publish a latency figure for AirPods. The clearest public measurement we found is a developer’s post on Apple’s forums from 2021: with AirPods (2nd generation) on an iPhone 12 mini, iOS reported an output latency of 160.7 ms, and the measured delay was about 215 to 220 ms just after connecting, falling to about 155 to 160 ms after 20 to 30 minutes. That is one person’s iPhone test, not a Mac figure, but it gives the scale.

For comparison, we read what macOS reports for the speakers of the MacBook Pro this page was written on (macOS 27.0, read from Core Audio’s device, safety-offset, buffer and stream latency properties at 48 kHz): 1,346 samples, which is 28.0 ms. That is the driver’s own report, not a measurement at the ear, and no Bluetooth headphones were connected, so we did not read a Bluetooth figure the same way.

What actually helps

  1. Use the Mac’s speakers or wired headphones for typing sounds. A USB or 3.5 mm wired headset has no radio link to buffer.
  2. AirPods Max on a cable. Apple lists AirPods Max 1 (USB-C) and AirPods Max 2 for “lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio” over the included USB-C to USB-C cable, after updating macOS and the AirPods’ firmware.
  3. Keep the app’s sounds short and sharp at the start. Any silence at the start of a sound file is heard as more delay; Teclo’s custom sound guide and its recorder both trim it.
  4. Don’t buy on a latency number alone. Several apps advertise one; they are their makers’ claims, measured their own way, and none of them includes your headphones.

What Teclo does about its own share

Teclo cannot shorten Bluetooth, but its code avoids adding delay where it can:

If your sounds are missing rather than late, see keyboard sound app not working. How the whole chain from key to sound works is in how keyboard sound apps work.

Questions

Can a keyboard sound app fix Bluetooth delay?

No. Apple says you can't change the latency caused by Bluetooth headphones or speakers, even in its own pro audio app. An app can only avoid adding delay of its own.

How much delay do AirPods add?

Apple publishes no figure. One developer measured AirPods (2nd generation) on an iPhone at about 155 to 220 ms, falling over the first half hour of use.

Are there AirPods without the delay on a Mac?

Apple says AirPods Max 1 (USB-C) and AirPods Max 2 give lossless and ultra-low latency audio when connected to a Mac with the included USB-C cable.

Does Teclo publish a latency figure?

No. We have not measured Teclo's key-to-sound time with the equipment that needs, so we don't quote one.
