Teclo vs Typemac

Updated

Typemac does one thing: three recorded switch profiles, played fast. Teclo costs less and plays more kinds of sound. The choice comes down to whether you want a few recordings or a wider set of sounds you can try first and extend yourself.

The short answer

Three profiles against sixteen packs

Typemac’s three profiles are called Butter Fingers, The Villain and Unreasonably Satisfying; its site says they are “real recordings” of “real hardware” and that Topre, Boba U4T and Kailh Box White are planned for version 1.2. Its packs download the first time you use them.

Teclo’s nine keyboard packs cover the same range from soft to heavy to crisp, each measured from the file the app plays. Butter is a soft, rounded clack at 2,479 Hz, Boulder a deep, ringing thock at 2,428 Hz with a 90 ms tail, and Knuckle a sharp, bright clack at 3,653 Hz. They are synthesized, not recorded, which is why there are also rain, marimba, typewriter, arcade and sci-fi packs. Play three above.

Your own switch

Typemac’s roadmap promises “Record your own switch. Drop it in and type.” Teclo ships that now. On its Create page, choose Record, then My keyboard, and press A, Space, Return and Delete three times each; Teclo builds a pack from your own board, asking for the microphone only while you record. You can also start from a pack and move five sliders, or drop in WAV files, and share any pack as one .teclo file. The custom sounds guide has the steps.

Both apps run on Apple silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 13 or later. For another direct-sold app with a short list of presets, see Teclo vs CupertinoClicks; the guide to keyboard sound apps for Mac has the full field.

Questions

How much does Typemac cost?

Typemac's site lists "$7 to own forever", paid once through a Dodo Payments checkout. Teclo costs $4.99 once.

Does Typemac have a free trial?

Its site lists none. It says that "if the app genuinely doesn't work on your machine, you won't be stuck paying for it", and offers half the price back to buyers whose video about it reaches 2,000 views. Teclo has a 1-day trial.

Can I use my own sounds in Typemac?

Not yet. Its site plans custom packs for version 1.3: "Record your own switch. Drop it in and type." Teclo's Create page already records a pack from your microphone.

Is Typemac faster than Teclo?

Typemac claims under 5 ms of audio latency and under 0.2% CPU on an M2 MacBook Pro. Those are its own figures; we have not measured Typemac, and we have not published a latency figure for Teclo.
